This sounds very similar to mine, do you know if your was the backlight or the unit was just black. Mine has exactly the same symptoms except that I found in direct sunlight or when I shine a torch on it, I can see the lcd screen a little bit.

How did you rip out the traffic master system? Did you take it to someone and did it start working straight after?
