- also with the access- if the car is running, you have the key in your pocket, and you get out and walk 15 feet away (key in pocket), will the car shut its self off since the key is out of range?
To open the door, the key has to be within a pretty tight range of the door (there are sensors in each door handle). Try standing on one side of the car with your key, and see if somebody else can open the door on the other side - they shouldn't be able to.

The car won't shut itself off - it will pop up a warning message. In theory, you could start the car and drive off without the key (leave it in the garage), and once you get to your destination - you're screwed (can't turn it back on, obviously). You'd have to ignore the warning that "Key is not present", so not like it's that easy to do.
