New- couple of questions...

Hi all- this looks to be a great resource for info-

We just bought an '07 on Saturday and I have a couple of questions-

-when the fog lights are on and you switch the headlights from low beams to high beams, only the drivers side fog light goes off. The passenger side stays on, even with high beams activated. On other cars we have, both fog lights go off with high beams active. Is this correct?

- with the "access" feature, if you are, say, sitting in your car in a parking lot with the doors locked, what prevents someone from walking up and opening your door from the outside by just pulling the handle? Either if the car is running or turned off?

- also with the access- if the car is running, you have the key in your pocket, and you get out and walk 15 feet away (key in pocket), will the car shut its self off since the key is out of range?

I am really loving this car- so much better in all respects than the S430 we got rid of. Amazing ride, power, handling.

thanks-

Concerning the fog lights that is normal. In Europe it is the opposite fog light that stays on. This is to protect from glare on oncoming vehicles while still allowing the benefit of added fog visibility on the right side of your vehicle.

To open the door, the key has to be within a pretty tight range of the door (there are sensors in each door handle). Try standing on one side of the car with your key, and see if somebody else can open the door on the other side - they shouldn't be able to.

The car won't shut itself off - it will pop up a warning message. In theory, you could start the car and drive off without the key (leave it in the garage), and once you get to your destination - you're screwed (can't turn it back on, obviously). You'd have to ignore the warning that "Key is not present", so not like it's that easy to do.

^ actually if the key is inside the vehicle the door handles won't respond to the unlock/lock actions. Try a car wash in your driveway... leave the keys inside the cabin... touch the door handles all you want, it won't respond. Now take them out and even spraying water on the door handles will make it go nuts.

S430 should've been a very good car. Flagship of the Benz. What didn't you like about it? It shouldn't have been a slouch either.

Ha!- Good question-

I'll confess- it wasn't me.

My wife said she felt like she was driving a marshmallow. Plus she says we don't have have our "old card" yet- she thinks if you drive a big Benz you have to be "old". And, mostly, she wanted an SUV.

I liked the car (S430)- very smooth, enough power, plush, great for highway trips.....and if you set the air suspension on "sport" it really handled well- but not nearly as fun to drive as this X5-

First we tried the Lexus ??470, then the M-B ML350, and last the X5 4.8. The BMW was head and shoulders above the others-

We both think it's far superior driving than the Benz-
