The first car I drove was a 1969 Chrysler Town & Country Wagon. It has a big plastic floor mat that would jam the gas pedal and the engine would run rough so you had reason to floor it. When the pedal would jam you would shut of the key and put in neutral stop on the side of the road and pull the mat back. It was not a big deal and no one even thought about removing the mat.
