Isn't that data a little skewed? Its only for vehicles that have theft recovery systems.

Here in Austin, just last week they ran a bit on the news about a rash of Ford F150 thefts. (I think that's the one it was, but it was a specific brand and model of trucks -- not just 'big trucks'). It was a "you better watch your truck!" report.

Here's a pretty specific list for January 2011 from the Houston Police department:
  • Ford trucks (109),
  • Chevrolet trucks (101),
  • Honda cars (81),
  • Chevrolet cars (51),
  • Dodge cars (48),
  • Dodge trucks (48),
  • Ford cars (45),
  • Toyota cars (43),
  • Nissan cars (31),
  • GMC trucks (27),
  • Acura cars (15), and
  • Buick cars (15).
"Ford trucks, Honda cars, and Chevrolet trucks have been listed in the top most stolen vehicles for a long time. For example, 172 Ford trucks, 138 Chevrolet trucks, and 77 Honda cars were stolen in December last year..."

I guess someone needed a truck for Christmas!

They only listed the top 12. So less than 15 European cars were stolen in January 2011 (in Houston). Perhaps professional thieves know that "if we steal it, they can find it" -- lets go look for something else.
