X5 Most Stolen Car in UK for 2010
BMW X5s and Range Rovers are the most desirable cars for thieves, new figures suggest. Together with the BMW M3 and Audi RS4 taking third and fourth places, these cars all hold the dubious "top positions" in the "top ten most frequently stolen and recovered vehicles of 2010", according to Tracker stolen vehicle recovery systems, which says that 65 per cent of the vehicles it recovered last year were worth an average of £25,000. "Once again our top ten list shows the thieves' favourites, with the Mercedes SLK and CLK also remaining at the top of the league," said Stephen Doran, managing director of Tracker. "The VW Golf is an interesting new entry at number nine, proving that it's not just owners of prestige vehicles who need to take note. In fact, 65 per cent of the vehicles we recovered in 2010 were worth £25,000 or less with just six per cent being worth £50,000 to £100,000." The lowest value vehicles stolen and recovered were a Peugeot 406 and a Ford Sierra at £1,000. The highest value cars stolen and recovered were a Mercedes Benz CL63 AMG at £120,000 and a Bentley GTC at £130,000. "With 84 per cent of all the cars we recovered last year being stolen using the keys, we remind every car owner to keep their keys safe at all times," added Doran, who said that Tracker worked like an electronic homing device, combining GSM, GPS and VHF technology to track down stolen vehicles And the most stolen car of 2010 was... - Telegraph |

Isn't that data a little skewed? Its only for vehicles that have theft recovery systems.
Here in Austin, just last week they ran a bit on the news about a rash of Ford F150 thefts. (I think that's the one it was, but it was a specific brand and model of trucks -- not just 'big trucks'). It was a "you better watch your truck!" report. Here's a pretty specific list for January 2011 from the Houston Police department:
I guess someone needed a truck for Christmas! They only listed the top 12. So less than 15 European cars were stolen in January 2011 (in Houston). Perhaps professional thieves know that "if we steal it, they can find it" -- lets go look for something else. |

That 'Austin List' is probably very close to the demographics of registered vehicles, by rank, in Austin or TX, or much of the US, imo.
Sometimes, on this BMW oriented Board, we forget what sells the most, and what brands of cars/trucks are really owned in the US, as a large percentage. GL, mD

Easier to sell parts off a Ford/Chevy truck than an X5?

That list was for Houston...there are a LOT of European cars running around Houston. Not nearly as many as Ford trucks or Honda sedans I'm sure, but if you look around at any single second on the highway you'll be able to spot a bunch. Its not like you're looking for a Bentley or a Shelby Cobra or something.
Oh, about WHY? I read a report from Allstate about what happens to cars/trucks stolen in Texas. Nice cars are taken far south of the border and resold. Not so nice cars and some trucks are used for the drug trade. Most of the trucks are used for illegal human traffic across the border. They didn't mention anything about chopping. I'm assuming that they wouldn't want to steal anything that could be easily fingered because a lot more than just "a stolen car" would be exposed if they're caught. |
