I wonder if the previous owner did a Bluetooth retrofit and failed to install the BT antenna. If it will not pair unless you pull down the back seat and hold the phone toward the rear, that is a pretty convincing indicator that you have a antenna problem. You may have to access the phone module and trace the wiring. If it has a BT antenna, I would relocate it to the rear of the arm rest where it belongs.
Not loading the phone book is probably the fault of HTC's screwed up Bluetooth stack. That is typical of an Andriod phone.
The newer mike part number is 84.31-6 938 762. You most likely have this already based on the model year of your car. However, if the PO did a retrofit, it is worth a look to confirm.
