Replacing Water Pump ????

Background:

Coolant has been leaking for the past week or so and is getting progressively worse. I thought it could have been a hose so I took it into the repair shop today. They just called and said it was the water pump that is leaking.

Their recommendation is to replace water pump and thermostat. Total cost is $1,200 including parts and labor.

Two questions:

1) Is that a fair price to replace the water pump and thermostat?

2) If I wanted to tackle this on my own, what is the level of difficulty for replacing a water pump and thermostat? My mechanical ability is modest but I have limited access to tools.

Thanks,
