Replacing Water Pump ????

Background:

Coolant has been leaking for the past week or so and is getting progressively worse. I thought it could have been a hose so I took it into the repair shop today. They just called and said it was the water pump that is leaking.

Their recommendation is to replace water pump and thermostat. Total cost is $1,200 including parts and labor.

Two questions:

1) Is that a fair price to replace the water pump and thermostat?

2) If I wanted to tackle this on my own, what is the level of difficulty for replacing a water pump and thermostat? My mechanical ability is modest but I have limited access to tools.

Thanks,

$1200????

Wow! I bought a new water pump, tstat/housing, and the specialty tools to remove the fan for less than $200. It took around 2 hours to replace and there are great DIY's on this site. Might as well replace your belts, tensioner pulleys, and expansion tank while you are at it.

Seems high to me.

You don't list your model, so we are only guessing.

When I look up my local BMW dealer's service price list for the E53, replacing the water pump is $419 for the 3.0, and $529 for the 4.4. That is parts and labour, shop supplies inc, taxes extra. Add a thermostat to that, it is a good plan to replace it, but the technicain is already in there so it won't be much more than the part cost on top of those prices. Those are OE parts, with a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty. They have some lifetime warranty offers, not sure if the water pump is part of that, but I suspect it is.

So yes, $1200 seems high.

I write this post assuming you have a 3.0.

$1,200 is too high even if the price included a Stewart water pump and Zionsville modified OEM T-Stat housing w/ mechanical T-Stat kit. You don't need that fancy stuff anyways so you'd be getting gassed either way. Your mechanic is puttin' ya on. Order all the OEM kit from ECS Tuning or TischerBMW (i.e. getbmwparts.com) and take it to another indy or do it yourself. Changing the pump and T-Stat unit is not that difficult but would probably take you a whole day if you haven't done this before - it may take a little longer if you aren't familiar with this kind of stuff. I'd set off a whole weekend just in case - matter of fact, I'd start disassembly on Friday evening so I could devote all of Saturday to reassembly (and maybe some small disassembly work you didn't finish the night before). Check around this and other forums (e.g. E46 fanatics and BimmerForums) for DIYs; they're out there. It's quite a straight forward job.

If you have the time, I think you could do it yourself. You don't need specialized tools for the job. A simple starter Craftsman mechanic's set that costs less than $100 should be more than enough to complete the job.

One more thing - if you have over 100,000 miles, regardless of what motor you have, change your main hoses while you're in there. Also, now would be a good time to flush your radiator if you've never flushed it or kept up with your 2-year fluid-change intervals. LiquiMoly makes a great radiator detergent that you can get from europaparts.com (it's only $9 and SUPER EASY to use).

PS. If you order the parts on your own, DO NOT FORGET to order the water pump and T-Stat gaskets. Good luck!

That's more like it.
Also I've heard there's a WP service plan going on if installed through the official dealership, correct me if I am wrong.
I paid $120 CAD for Saleri branded WP + around $300 at indie for labor.
