Excellent point. Yes otherwise you'll basically lock yourself out of the trunk (this does apply to the E53 X5).

As a side note for those changing the battery in the parking lot of Autozone or elsewhere as I did yesterday. Be sure and not to close the gate of the X5 when swapping the battery or you will have to utilize emergency gate opening procedure to open. I learned the hard way as the electrical system is obviously shut down at that point. Just something to keep in mind
