after replacing a battery; usually, just turning key on for a minute clears all the warning lights on dash panel. And, I lost no radio presets. There are several threads on this, but Search Tab/linking is problematic currently. I would not worry nor go to the extreme of using a back up battery, imo. GL, mD

There is no coding needed for the E53 X5 (btw, you're posting in an E70 forum). I wouldn't bother with the charger either. Just make sure you get a great new battery and then properly charge it up with the charger. If I may I recommend the Exide Global Extreme L5/49-E108. 900 CCA 1080 CA 185 RC 14" x 6.875" x 7.4375" 40 FR 108 PR. It also has a 40 month warranty.

? on battery charging to X5_Meister
Not to pile on this thread and thank you for the great info and specs. on batteries. It was informative and will help in my swap out in the coming days. This may be a naive question (at least I am certainly not aware or I wouldn't be asking) but when you purchase a new battery do you need to charge before installing it? This may be 101 stuff but the last few I purchase over the past decade I basically just did a swap and install. You brought up in your reply above that it should be charged (prior?). Can you elaborate if you have moment? Greatly appreciated. Thanks. Also I'm a city driver/dweller and unfortunately I park on the street. Therefore, when doing a swap I am basically grabbing few tools, heading to Autozone, and half hour late hopefully I'm done. Not sure if that was important to share, but don't have a garage unless I actively pursue one.

I have never bought a new battery that did not have sufficient charge to start my cars. The distributors keep the batteries charged because if they don't the batteries will deteriorate. If the battery does not sit on shelve too long it will be fine without charging. I actually go to my local Interstate battery distributer and buy my batteries there and change them in their parking lot. If the battery I bought did not start my gusto I would give it back to them and get another one.

Happy to help. As a general rule you shouldn't need to charge the battery, however best practice is to fully charge it after installation (not before installation). If you don't do it, certainly nothing bad is going to happen, but like all rechargeable batteries, a full charge is the best practice to get the max out of them in the long run. I'm sure a number of people on the forum will agree. So if you can do it, pick up a good charger (see here: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...w-one-fyi.html ) and set it up. If not, don't lose any sleep over it.

Thanks for all the great info. It comes in handy when you need it. Never knew why and now I do. Thanks.
As a side note for those changing the battery in the parking lot of Autozone or elsewhere as I did yesterday. Be sure and not to close the gate of the X5 when swapping the battery or you will have to utilize emergency gate opening procedure to open. I learned the hard way as the electrical system is obviously shut down at that point. Just something to keep in mind

Excellent point. Yes otherwise you'll basically lock yourself out of the trunk (this does apply to the E53 X5).
