This works only if the BMW is single-locked...which sounds like what the kids may have done.

The only scenario I can think of where you can lock the keys inside the cabin..requires that all the doors are locked manually (or the central locking button is used while the driver's door is closed)...then one exits from one of the doors other than the driver's door and it is then manually locked. This means that the vehicle is single-locked and all is required is two pulls of the interior door handles to open a door.

If the vehicle is locked with the key (remotely or manually)...then the vehicle is double-locked...and the interior door handles won't open the doors with only the "normal" two pulls of the handle.

Much sympathy to anyone who goes through this...but again, it is another reminder to those that only possess one key as to NOT be cavalier with how you use your key, where it's located and to make sure that it is ALWAYS on your person at all times and not inside the vehicle if there's ANY possibility of it being locked inside.

Or at least be cognizant that the key is inside the vehicle and to make sure NO ONE locks the key inside the car by giving yourself access so in case you go against rule #1 (always keep the key on your person/pocket/purse outside of the vehicle):
  • rolling down a window or
  • unlocking all the doors even when entering thru the tailgate (so in case you do set the key down and close the tailgate...you can still press the release pad, or go inside the cabin and press the remote tailgate release button
