The sound of a straight piped turbodiesel isn't as loud as one would think either, as the turbo kills a lot of noise. I had straight pipe exhaust on my E34 525tds (no cat, no mufflers), and it wasn't annoyingly loud. Even the neighbors told me it was ok. Inside, there was hardly any exhaust noise at all.

I might try doing what you did first. And if I feel like it's too silent, I'll go straight piped.
Whatever you decide ,you will need to buy the clamping exhaust collars that attach the exhaust to the rear silencers.Mine didnt have these ,so i had to cut and get some, eventhough on REALOEM it shows it having them
Run the car without rear silencers ,first and see..Its great sound ,,you will love it,not loud at all
