The 2003 X has a round airbag. If you want a wheel with thumb rests the E46 M3 wheel utilizes a round airbag and has thumb rests. It is a direct fit with no modification. It is considerably thicker than the standard wheel but not as thick as later M3 wheels that don't take the round airbag. The later M3 wheels will fit but you will need a different airbag and may need a new clockspring.
The photo is of a M3 SMG paddleshift wheel on a 2002 The same wheel is available in a non-paddleshift version. I didn't need a new clockspring coming from the sport wheel to the M3 wheel. Everything was plug and play. Your change to the non paddleshift may or may not require a new clock string. You won't need to purchase a new airbag.
