BMW provides the Assist service for the first year free of charge. You must pay for the service thereafter.

There are no warranty issues with doing the Assist to BT conversion. However BMW does want you to sign a waiver acknowledging that you have chosen to disable the Assist feature (but if you do the conversion yourself, there's nothing obligating you to sign anything) - see http://www.bmwmotorsports.org/pdf/BM...st_ULF_TSB.pdf
