Please don't take this the wrong way...but your description of the pairing procedure is vague. Letting us know what set-up you have (MID or Nav monitor), and what phone you have can be very helpful. Someone with the same phone may be able to know exactly what to do...as well as if you're working with the MID or Nav monitor.
Since we can't see what you're doing, nor know if you completely understand the pairing process...it's crucial to explain your problem in detail so that its clear we understand what you're doing right or incorrectly. When its unclear to us reading your thread...you can sometimes get no response...to getting incorrect suggestions...to repeating what you already know & have done.
For instance, the sentence in the quote above doesn't make clear if you're waiting for instructions from the BT module or your phone. Once the ignition is turned on correctly, and the button on the steering wheel is pressed...you have a short window to turn the BT on your PHONE on. You should be waiting to see a prompt from your PHONE to enter the PK code from your X5.
I can't remember if its before or after the PK code request...but when the X & your phone is in pairing mode...you should see your X5's VIN appear as a selectable pairing device (on your PHONE). It will read
"BMW_ _ _ _ _" (where the blank spaces = the last 5 digits of your VIN). Then from this list of suitable pairing devices on your PHONE...you select your X5.
It only takes one time to pair your phone. From there on out...just make sure you have your PHONE's BT activated. Your X5 can't turn your phones BT on...so once paired and the X & your phone aren't pairing up...make sure your phone's BT is activated. Some smart phones will automatically turn BT off to save battery life.
HINT: KL R & KL 15 = ignition positions 1 & 2
