The adhesive side of the vinyl is not the issue ( it's the same for whatever 3m vinyl you choose)
The trims on the other hand ,might be either of a very glossy finish or a more porus finish. The vinyl paper in theory should stick better on a dull surface rather than a shinny surface (if both are non-porous).
The "porous" trim , let's call it textured , offers less contact surface for the vinyl to stick to. What people are saying here is that the textured trim is not textured enough for the vinyl not to stick well. Basically , either one, gloss or matte trim the 3M vinyl will do the job very well.
