You can usually find new maps on eBay...and you can even spring for them at your local BMW dealership's parts dept. Make sure you get the correct DVDs/CDs (not the ones for the new iDrive models). Not sure which Nav CPU you have...but if you have the MK4 (DVD) system...I believe TomTom makes the maps for North America now.
Back in 2012 when I got my X5...I found the 2012 maps seen below on eBay...No Amer comes in 2 DVD discs now since I guess there's more POI (point of interest) data:

You'll need to go through the entire page...to find the nuggest of info you seek...but I believe the link to download the software upgrade is near the bottom in the section under
"to upgrade your nav software follow these steps".
