Crooked Exhaust Tips? Feat. 4.8is Mufflers

Alright, so yesterday I had my recently acquired 4.8is mufflers installed on my 3.0. First off - I think it sounds really awesome. While it doesn't add power per se, It totally smooths out the power band of the car and adds a whole new look to the back. Can't wait to hear it when I put headers on it. BUT, I think the mufflers look crooked. The shop insisted that they were crooked because they "weren't meant to fit" and in order to fix it, they would have to cut the hangers and fabricate new ones. Does that sound right? I would have thought they should have fit just like they wound on a 4.8is.

Check your exhaust hangers, some may have stretched or broken.

And that they are the proper hangers as per realoem.

I had crooked tips on a 4.6is once (not that bad though) that were caused by stretched hangers.

Ah, Thats a good idea! Maybe the 12+ year old hangers didn't like being touched and the extra added weight. I'll check it out.

I am more inclined to the problem being when the exhaust shop connected the 4.8is 2.5" pipes to your stock 2.25"!
The 4.8is pipe diametre is larger ,so the workshop would need to cut amd weld a 2.5" pipe to the falange ,for a perfect uncrooked fit!
Look under the car ,where the exhaust joins and check!Take it back to worshop and get them to do a proper job.

Agreed. Your poor E53 looks like it has sad, droopy eyes that are tired of the sinus infection. Poor thing.

Check your exhaust hangers but honestly it looks like they were welded on poorly and the alignment not checked enough with tack welding prior to doing a full weld.

It has nothing to do with them being different mufflers than factory. I used full axle back sections, and did not have to touch or modify any mountings or hangers.

I would probably find a more competent shop who can weld them straight, unless your hangers are absolutely ratted to shit.

EDIT: You have almost double the miles I do, so maybe your hangers are too worn and droopy. You def don't need to pay the shop to fabricate new hangers.

Yeah, I don't think the hangers are that bad. They say because the muffler has two hangers, Its not going anywhere. I think thats BS

I think you need to find a guy who can weld without being half in the bag.

OP,
Not only is the pipe diametre different ,2.25" vs 2.5" ,but the flange aligment to resonator is also different and this looks like where the shop got it wrong!
You have some adjustment you can make !The inner part of the tips are at the moment higher than the outer part! You can unscrew the holding nuts from both inner hangers (x4) from the long bolts. You can then fit "spacers" (some M8 washers) and refit the nuts ,thus lowering the inner tips!May not be enough if the tips are too crooked but will make it better!
