Must be something wrong.
I have a 2006 X5 with IceLink installed. Tom at EAS did it for me - works great via steering wheel and displays tunes on Nav screen.

I'm scheduled to have the IceLink installed in my '06 at Bav Soundwerks in 2 weeks. Sounds like you got some bum info.

Nothing changed on the 2006's that would make it incompatible. Must be a problem with their web site.
Order what you need from Tom G. @ EAS - you'll be glad you did!
