Talking Linksys WRT54G Version 5 No Longer Garbage

Hehehe, we had a thread on here the other day because someone was asking about the Linksys WRT54G router, and said he had heard that the version 5 model was deemed garbage by some people from the open source community.

Well I explained why these "modders" thought so. Their opinion is now reversed. They found a way to load Linux on version 5 as well. Version 5 still is not as good as a version 4 though because it has less memory.

Linkage to short bedtime story

Why would you want to change the firm ware?

Not sure, I'm not into modding that particular piece of equipment right now.

Why pay three-digit figures for a router, when you can pay around $40-50 for this one and mod it for free via a firmware upgrade?

I personally have no need for the added "features" that a third-party adds to the WRT54G, but there are PLENTY of people out there who do this kind of stuff for a living and/or hobby.

I modded my Linky router by changing the firmware, to enable increased power output. Makes my home LAN have even better reception throughout my house.

Change the output power setting on the new firmware's screen. In other words, that is one reason you mod the device: to enable settings that the original firmware keeps hidden. If you want to try it, read more here.
