Is the auto transmission in the E39 540's the same as the 4.4L X5 auto?

Well looks like i'll be needing to replace the transmission in my 2001 X5 soon (reverse slipping problem ) and i'm researching transmissions to buy. I'm looking to buy a used one (with a warranty of course) however I was wondering if the 540 4.4L E39 auto transmission is the same as the one in my 2001 4.4L X5? According to realoem they are both the 5HP24 (A5S 440Z) transmissions, however it says the x5 tranny is a "4 wheel"? Thanks in advance!

There are national tranny rebuild specialists that can supply you a rebuilt tranny with 3 year/36k warranty for around $3500. Any good indy will have access to one of these suppliers.
I had an engine for a Sable from one and it was better than new as the reman supplier had performed upgrades to many problem areas.

I can get a brand new one from Tischer bmw for around $3500, I was looking to spend quite a bit less. Does anyone know if the 540 and the x5 tranny's are interchangeable?
thanks

I have a friend who's a certified bmw tech who's gonna hook me up, but I think they usually run very high for an install ($1k+?) If you were here in GA I could have him give you a great price on an install too

They are not the same. Different part numbers. Plus, one is a rwd application, whereas the other is awd.
