Question 60,000 Mile Inspection / Service II

I did a bit of searching for information on the Inspection II and unfortunately the search function will not permit a search for "II". I know there are posts out there but I cannot acess them.

My questions are: What does the Inspection II entail? What have others paid? Can you cut out some of the BS of the inspection? Personaly I think the whole thing is a bit of BS but I need to get it done to keep my aftermarket warranty in good standing.

I paid 550 a few years ago. Allthough it was for a 97 M3, most of it was labor. It will probably be a little different, but am not certain. The BMW shop I went to has a huge checklist that they go thru. I tried to cut out some of the BS, but they say they stick to their checklist (what a suprise).
If you or anyone is able to get a hold of the standard BMW checklist, I don't see why you can't do some of the things on your own, and cut out some BS. It's not like they are fixing your car, they are just going thru it. It should be up to you to see what you want checked.

I am in same boat! I just ordered the parts from bav auto, according to the "Service Schedule" the major things that are changed:
  • Oil and filter
  • Air filter
  • spark plugs
  • fuel filter ? (have hurd talk about doing that but im not sure, anyone know?)
  • Microfilter
  • grease hinges, ect
Then the inspection part
  • check and inspect a bunch of things
Have not seen complete DIY article for everything needed, I am thinking about doing one for the 3.0

Anyone else?? I know there were a few threads on what was included and what it cost but I cannot locate them.

I am going to call my extended warranty company and ask them if I can perform some of the inspections myself and what if I have already replaced things recently such as the brakes......

I have the exact list they go off of. It starts from the following:

Undercarriage
Change oil and oil filter
Check Transmission for leaks
Check Transfer case for leaks
Check rear axle for leaks
Half-Shafts (front and rear): Check for leaks at flexible boots
Visually check fuel tank, lines and connections for leaks
Check condition, position, and mounting of exhaust system. Examine for leaks
Check power steering system for leaks. Check P/S fluid level; add fluid if necessary???????????????
Check overall thickness of front and rear disc brakes pads (outer pads only) using special tool. Record the values below....
If replacement is necessary:
Examine brake disc surface. Clean brake pad contact points in calipers. Grease wheel centering hubs. Check thickness of parking brake linings only when replacing rear pads. Record values below......
Check steering for absence of play, condition of suspension track rods, front axle joints, steering linkage and joint disc.
Check brake system connections and lines for leaks, damage, and incorrect positioning.
Check packing brake actuation. Adjust if necessary.
Check all tire pressure (including spare). Correct if necessary.
Inspect entire body according to terms of rust perforation limited warranty(must be performed at least every two years).

Engine Compartment
Read out diagnostic system
Check engine cooling system/heater hose connections for leaks
Check coolant level
Check level of brake fluid
Replace brake fluid every 2 yrs.
Check windshield washer fluid level and antifreeze protection.
Washer fluid freeze point temp.
Check A/C operation
Replace Microfilter
Reset Service Interval Indicator

Body/Electrical Equipment
Check Batt.
Check lighting system (all brake lights, xenon, etc....)
Check instrument cluster
Check all warning/indicator lights, check control.
Check turn signals. hazard warning flashers, brake lights, horns, headlights dimmer/flasher switch.
Check wipers and washers system; wiper blades, washer jet positions.
Check condition and function of safety belts.
Check central locking/double lock.
Check operation of all latches.
Check heater/air conditioner blower fan, rear window defogger.
Check rear view mirrors.
Visually examine the SRS airbag units for torn covers, obvious damage or attachment of decals, decorations or accessories.

Final Inspection
Road test with check of brakes, suspension, steering, clutch/manual or automatic transmission.

And thats it folks!!! The Inspection II is the same thing, just they tell you to change the Intake air Cleaner element. Thats the only difference. My dealer left this list behind when I last went for my Inspection II. Hope this helps everyone out. Now everyone has word for word info on what exactly they do. And the final answer is.............NOTHING!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK...

Bimmerdude has given you the list, but you could look on the X5World home page and click on BMW Service Schedule. It lists all the checks.
