Shopping for X5 3.0 - What to watch for?

I've looked for buyer's guides but haven't come across very much information. I'm looking to replace my wife's Saturn Vue with a BMW X5, but don't know what the trouble spots are. I drive an '01 330i, so getting an X5 3.0 at least gives me a leg up on engine maintenance experience, not to mention I just prefer the I6 to V8s.

So far all I've found as far as things to look out for is cosmetic, like the door handle chipping. Are there any mechanical issues I should look out for on higher-mileage examples? I do my own maintenance and repairs but I don't want to buy myself major hassles. Does the X5 transmission have the no-reverse problem that 3 series auto-boxes have? I'd prefer a manual trans but this is for my wife so that option is off the table.

Thanks!

I have a 2002 X5 3.0 and here is what I have replaced so far:

Water Pump (preventative)
Aux Fan (AC wasn't blowing cold air at stop)
Axle (CV boot was torn)
2 CV Boot Covers that tore
Seized caliper, pads, rotors
Door lock actuator (frozen)
Drivers side memory module, stopped working
torn elbow in manifold
rear lower control arm
thrust rod bushings
Instrument cluster, missing pixels
Hood switch for alarm
Central locking module

A lot of these were covered under CPO and now I am on my own dime. CPO warranty gets a thumbs up in my view if you can get one with 40 or 50k miles left on the warranty
