exhaust EGR tube on 4.6is

I am doing the water pump on my 03 4.6is and there is this annoying exhaust tube that goes right across the front that I had to remove in order to get the pump off and new one on. so what I did is remove it on the drivers side and pulled it out a bit enough to gain clearance to R&R the pump. The Bentley manual says nothing about this tube btw, so not sure if it is a 4.6is only or also on the 4.4i.

It is a major PITA to get back in place... Somehow I can't get it lined up quite right - might have bent the tube a bit during the process of moving it out of the way.
Any hot tips on how to get that tube back in the hole?
I am using a mirror to look down the area where the tube goes into the hole, but seeing it doesn't help get the damn thing to line up....

I'm spending more time on that than I did on actually swapping the pump!

It's always something silly like this on these kind of jobs...

Hmmm, I don't remember seeing that when I took the X apart a few weeks ago. All that was in front was the TB, Throttle plate, MAF plumbing, Clutch fan, WP with connections. That is really it. Only thing I can think of is this, P/N 11721433344, secondary air line. Is that it?

Thats the crossover tube for the Secondary Air system. It allows air to be pumped directly into the exhaust during warm-up to improve emmissions by quickly heating heating the catalys. You've probably heard the air pump running when the engine is cold.

Try as best as possible to straighten the tube. Cover both of the o-rings in a heavy silicone based lube and it will help the slide back in. Also, make sure the holes are free of any build up from exhaust or dirt. make sure it's lined up and the 10mm bolts tight or you will end up with a SES light and a nasty sounding exhaust leak. (Ask me how I know..). Good luck!

ya - that is it, the secondary air line. What a PITA - I finally got it back in the hole after messing with it for more than an hour. I got the nut snug and best I can tell it's all sealed up, but guess I won't know for sure until I fire the bad-boy back up!

I don't know what the problem was, must have tweaked it just a bit because it was just not lining up right but I was able to get it close and then pushed the tube by hand to slip into the hole. Not a fun item to play with - I'm so glad they put that sucker right in front of the water pump......

special build - only mine has it!

Hey, looked like exhaust air tubing, guessed wrong on EGR vs. air.

I absolutly HATE hearing this air pump. It drowns out any other sound, and makes my X sound like a industrial size fan! (for some reason it reminds me of an Isuzu Rodeo... dont/didn't they have that fan sound all the time?)

I know I'll be bashed for asking if it can be removed, so I can throw it in the woods and forget about it... I wonder if there is a way to quiet it down?

If I just took power away from it, I'm sure it would throw a code, right?

Now Jordo, you know damn well if your ass isn't in the seat right, the X will throw a code. haha.

But as far as the sound, it shouldn't be that noticeable. I look through the post to see whats up because this has been up a while.

NEW*** Ok, so that secondary air pump is what is creating a lot of noise then. Well, it shouldn't be making that much noise. if you hear it from within the cabin and you are describing it like an industrial Wind fan, it might be on its last leg, probably something with the bearing and spindle having too much play.

Anyone else want to chime in on what to do??? I want to say replace the sucker, but not 100% positive if it is on its last leg.
