Can i use a wider tire on my stock 18inch rim?

Is it possible to use a wider tire than the 255/55/18 on the stock 18inch rim? I need to buy a new set and I was just wondering if I can have some more meat on them.
In the perfect world I would have a set of style 87s or 168s on

No, I don't think so but you can put a pair of these H&R wheel spacers on the rear wheels (if your X5 can handle them).

I'm returning an unused set to ECS as I sold my 18" wheels.

A 285/50-18 shoud make an okay replacement, is approved down to a 8" wide rim so it should fit your stockers no problem, and is only .2" larger in diameter than stock. Do I know anyone who's done it though? No. But in theory it should work.

I run 265/55/18 winter tires (don't seem to be sold anymore) and those look great but wider than 275 is probably tough to mount on an 8.5 inch wide wheel.
