Nokian WR G2 SUV

All season, snowflake/severe duty rated
Nokian WRG2 SUV

Just ordered a set for my 235/65/17s and will get them installed this weekend. Will update. I've heard nothing short of remarkable reviews about this tire.

Nokian is essentially a winter tire company based out of Finland and this is one of their all season tires. Unlike many other all seasons, they're emphasis is on light snow/slush/wet performance and can be driven year-round. I'm like a kid on Christmas eve....

Just got them put on today. The shop (Jack Williams; part of American Car Care Centers) said it didn't need any weights! That's a first for me. Nevertheless, highway up to 75mph is super smooth. Naturally newer tires feel great. Wife, in the passenger seat, noticed the smoother, more comfortable ride within about 4 miles.

They're 50,000 mile tires and I plan to run them year-round as well as rotating them every 5,000 miles. I'm getting new rear upper control arms and front thrust rod & bushings installed next week in addition to an alignment so that should assist with even wear. Because the compound is softer I'm going to have them align it as conservatively as possible and put so much camber into the rears as BMW specifies. I rarely drive the X aggressively.

We're supposed to get some light snow tonight so i'm hoping to go out and play.

This set is inflated with nitrogen (well, mostly nitrogen) and at 32psi all around.

THX!!!

Last night we had about 3inches of snow. Then on top of that freezing rain. After driving onto my driveway, I got out and felt te surface and there was a thick layer of ice on top of all the snow. The roads had been plowed but still very slushy and freezing rain coming down.

The tires performed superbly. Inspired much confidence. Leaving my neighborhood I go down a pretty steep hill (steep enough that once I couldn't get up in heavy snow with decent tires) and at the bottom is a stop sign. Right there is where I always slide. not this time. Calm, mannered stop. Abs didn't kick on either. Driving along, I drive alongside a creek and its always colder and rarely plowed. Today it was and was very slushy. I did 45 there and felt comfortable. There is another 90 degree turn at an intersection that is banked just right and the rear end always slips. At this point I was feeling like a superhero so I didn't slow down much (still doing around 15mph) and I did feel the back end get squirmy but by no means did I feel like I was losing control or the rear was coming around.

Up a little further on an overpass getting onto the highway, I had once lost control on some black ice and I saw it there today. Its just as I enter the turn. I drove through it cautiously at about 15mph and sped up a bit as I went around the 180 degree turn as I know I hae a tendency to lose the back end a little there. It was perfect. No slipping.

On the highway (speed limit 55), I felt very comfortable. Wheels felt planted and steering connected. After a few miles of playing it safe and crossing over slush covered lane markers a few times, I picked up the pace and was doing 65 for about 10 miles.

I feel very comfortable with these tires and would recommend them.

Hi Wayne'sWorld. Would you mind giving an update on your Nokians? Did you run them year round or just for last winter? If you ran them year round how was wet and dry/summer performance in the Nokians?

I'm debating on either a set of Nokian WR G2 or a set of Continental ExtremeWinterContact tires on my '01 X5 4.4i.

Thanks!

We ended up running the Nokian WRG2 SUV's on my wife's '06 X5. We didn't run them as summer tires though, we did run them though the end of May (took me a while to decide on summer tires). Overall they feel very similar to the stock Michelin Energy MXV4's, but with better wet weather manners and braking. Here is more of our experience, and impressions..

Hey there - sorry for the late reply. The tires have been superb. I've had them on since maybe February? Took them into 12inches of unplowed snow and they ate it up. I've also had it on all summer which included 4 trips to Toronto from eastern PA and averaged 21.3MPG - can't complain at all. I've just made sure to keep up with checking my tire pressures every week or 2. I use 32 in the front and 33 in the back for my 235/65/17's. They really are the perfect tire because while I never push the X to the limits of adhesion I can still take an off-ramp aggressively and plow through rain and snow.
