Just turn the key to position 1.....The radio will power up, but everything else (HVAC, Headlights, etc) will remain off.
EDIT: If i remember correctly, the manual labels key positions as 0 = Off 1 = Accessories 2 = Run 3 = Start

If your headlights come on when you turn the ignition to position 1...then take them out of AUTO mode and turn the headlights off (that is...if you want to sit in the car and listen to the radio).
Ignition position 1 has the least amount of functions turned on...so less drain on the battery.

bad idea to spend considerable time in the car listening to the radio while engine is off - it will take the battery into twilight zone... been there, done that...

Funny thing is that in the E46, when you turn the igition off. You can hit the power button on the radio twice and the radio will operate for like, 30 min. Never tried it in the X5...

Yes it is. When you turn the car off, even with no key inserted , you can listen to the radio for 20 min. I tried it but didn't wait to check on the 20 min allowance time. I think even when you just enter the car and without inserting your key, you can still able to listen to the radio
