Installing Pioneer AppRadio 3 and 8 channel Helix P-DSP

I have a '02 4.6is with DSP and no nav.

I just ordered the Janus-Design double bin bezel and mounting kit from Germany. After doing a lot of reading, this seems to be the best one out there. It sure wasn't cheap, so it better be!

Being that I have the DSP system, I have to replace the stock amps. I'm planning to get the Helix P-DSP which features 6 inputs (which will match up nicely with the 6 line level outputs on the AppRadio3), and 8 line level outputs.

Since the X5 has 11 speakers and the Helix only has 8 channels, I'm wondering what will be the best compromise as far as how to connect those 11 speakers to the 8 channels of the Helix.

I was thinking the following:

ch1/2 - front left/right door tweeter
ch3/4 - front left/right dash midrange
ch5/6 - front left/right door midbass
ch7 - rear left midrange and midbass (w/ passive xover)
ch8 - rear right midrange and midbass (w/ passive xover)

I'd then run the sub line level directly to the sub amp.

What do you guys think?

I figure a 6 channel amp plus a 3 channel amp would be the most cost effective way to get 9 amplified channels. Of course the 3 channel amp should have significantly more power on the sub channel.

Here's link to the Helix P-DSP:

Helix P-DSP Programmable 8-channel digital signal processor at Crutchfield.com

For now I was going to keep the stock speakers (including sub) and see how well they will sound. First speaker upgrade, if needed, will likely be to mod the oem sub box to fit a single 8" driver.

The phone I'm integrating with the AppRadio3 is a Motorola RAZR MAXX, btw.

Dear god that's expensive.

Might I suggest getting some Zapco DC reference amps (even used ones off DIYMA or, shudder, ebay) instead?

Also, ditch the rear soundstage, with the exception of our 'subs' in the hatch. I don't know about you, but I listen to music facing the stage. Rear fill, while doable w/the DSP and time alignment in the Zapco's or the Helix, is a royal pain in my experience (getting it just right is tougher than just taking a tape measure out...).

Also, please tell me you aren't using the stock speakers. They aren't that good. One of my front door speakers pretty much fell apart in my hands when I put in my new front speakers (Hybrid Audio Technologies Imagine Series - 6.5 inch). It's a budget line from HAT, but they are fine speakers. My bitch with my system has nothing to do with the front speakers anymore. I have other *issues* I'm fighting...

Does that monster Pioneer head unit fit in our dash? I thought the hvac is somewhat in the way for larger units like that one? I might be confusing things though...

Good luck and keep us posted on what you finally decide to do.

Appreciate the feedback Kirk!

Wow, those Zapco amps do look very interesting with built in DSP and controllable from a laptop. And the price is excellent on the used 1st gen ones.

Yeah, I'll look at dropping the rear door speakers from the setup.

As for the Pioneer HU, according to Janus-Design, they state that all Pioneer units will fit. I know another member here just ordered the AppRadio3. I'll see if I can ping him to see if he is having any fitment issues.

I'll need to take a close look at my current speakers. I just replaced the driver door window regulator (imagine that), and noticed that the midbass speaker did not look oem. Too bad I already put the door skin back on...

Just got an email from Janus-Design that my bezel/mount shipped!

Here's a shot of the front passenger door mid bass driver. If you look closely, you can see the number 26019 on the surround. It this oem or aftermarket?

While I had the camera out, I decided to take some "before" pictures. Here's the factory "HU". Note how a lot of the pixels are burned out.

The DSP amp is down at the bottom. There are no extra connectors. I wonder what all the empty "rack space" is supposed to be used for?

And finally a shot of the sub.

Why'd you pry the grill off the front speaker? To get to the front speaker take the door panel off...

The rack on the back driver's side is for the nav computer and the cd changer.

The speaker grill fell off by itself. The previous owner had done a really bad job of trying to glue it on. Most/all of the tabs have broken off that cover.

I should have popped the driver side speaker when I had the door panel off doing the window regulator. I was just curious if those look like the oem speakers or if the previous owner upgraded them.

Most oem speakers I have dealt with in the past have had cheap paper cones, these appear to be an upgrade from that. I'll find out soon enough I suppose when I tear into the doors again.

Not having the nav computer makes sense, but I would have thought the CD changer was standard with the DSP sound system, but I guess not. Doesn't really matter since I'm replacing the hu anyway.

Still waiting on the double din janus kit to show up.

The Janus double DIN kit finally showed up today after almost 30 days! It was held up in customs in NY for several weeks for some reason.

Quality is definitely top notch.

As for the MID, if all I loose is the MPG, Range, Stopwatch, Clock, etc and the truck otherwise operates normally with no codes, I might just leave it out.

I lost another window regulator after just 100 miles of driving since replacing the driver door one, so I guess I'll get the opportunity to find out what speakers are currently in the truck shortly. This time it was the right rear door. You guys aren't kidding about those regulators needing to be replaced often. I'm hoping to go at least another 200 miles before the next one goes. I'll probably just stop rolling down all the windows to air out the truck when it has been sitting in the sun on a hot day...

Just pulled the trigger on a pair of Zapco amps, the DC656 for the front stage, and a DC501 for the sub.

Rolling to Crutchfield this afternoon to pickup the AppRadio 3 and misc cables and such needed for the install.

Nice to see progress is being made and its nice to see a Janus kit up close. Expensive but definitely looks to be worth it. I have an idea on mine and once I get my hands on an MID will be trying it out and go from there. Keep us updated
