Rear hatch lock randomly closing by itself

2005, Sport, having an odd problem with the rear latch. Sometimes it will lock itself after opening it with the fob or center console button. Seems to always happen if I open driver's door, push open hatch button, then shut driver's door. Its like the impact from shutting the driver's door jars the truck enough to cause the rear latch to close on itself.

Also, in the winter months, the rear latch would randomly cycle open and close sometimes. I'd hear a whirring noise from the garage and it was the lock moving by itself!

Any thoughts?

Happens to me. I just don't slam the driver door for the impact to travel to hatch. remember we have soft close hatch ......or my 05 4.8 does.

Right - mine has a soft close as well, but I'm surprised even a light close would trigger it

this subject had come up already once or twice... i think we had come to a conclusion that it was internal airpressure in the cabin that sucked in the hatch... try to do it with one of the windows open, i forgot if it would work or not... the thread was too long ago for my memory to remember that... sorry...

Don't mean to threadjack, but this seems a reasonable place to voice a similar issue. My X5 doesn't fully release the hatch with the dash button. The actuators seem to fire, it sounds like it releases, but it won't open. I still have to unlock and hit the tailgate trigger. Thoughts?

Absent - you may be having the same problem as the OP.
I used to think something was up with my hatch too. Push the dash button, hear it unlatch, get out close the driver door and go back to open the hatch and it's not unlatched. Took me a while, but the closing of the driver door was causing it to re-latch. Try it without closing the driver door.

Ok - haven't had the problem with leaving a window open.

However, here is another problem: If the truck is unlocked, I cannot open the rear hatch without the key fob. When I try to lift the hatch, I don't feel any switch click or anything. On my 2000 540, I feel a little micro switch click when I try to open the trunk - I wonder if the X5 switch is bad?

the rear switch is wired through a connector with 4 wires - 1 ground, 1 - left lic plate light, 1 - the other lic light and 1 - handle switch. pull the handle assembly off (4 torx screws), test the switch with a multimeter. i have the pinout somewhere, but there are only 4 wires, brown is ground... i find it, and will post it
