Cigerette lighter plugs always powered?

Hey all,
first post here.
Just got myself a 2006 X5 4.4i with Navi and DSP.
Hate the stereo, wow, it's awful sounding. Ordered an AUX-in kit from ECS so I can at least plug in my ipod to the stereo. (i'm so surprised how bad the quality of the sound is, but we will save that discussion for now)
Anyways, when I am going to install the Aux-in kit, I am also wanting to wire up my dash cam. The dash cam I have has a cigarette plug in for power, I was planning on using the plug located beneath the glove compartment in the passenger foot well as I don't see myself using it for anything else. Is this plug constantly powered? I don't want to wire the camera on full time as it will kill my battery. I want the camera to have power when the car has power/running. If this cigarette plug won't function like that, what is the second best option to get this running correctly?

While I'm here. I've done a bit of searching, but is there an easy to install navi/bluetooth/gps system to replace my OEM stereo that works with DSP and steering wheel controls? I am pretty handy with wiring etc but don't want to go too crazy. I really miss bluetooth streaming/bluetooth phone calls and navi would be great to use as well instead of using my phone for that. Cheers in advance

Hi there and welcome!
Post some pictures of your x whenever you have time.
Neither of us think the DSP sounds awfully bad , it actually sounds pretty good for what it is..there is a direct speaker replacement for our X's from BSW if you choose to go that route ;as for the plug beneath the glove box, yes it is always hot(on).
Dynavin came out with a new model (N6) that is supposed to work with the DSP but currently it works only for Europe cars..they're working on a update for US units.

Hope that helps

There is a flashlight plug in the glove box that BMW sells an aux power adapter for. That plug is switched and turns off with the ignition.

Just google "BMW aux power adapter" for pics, sellers & info:

Just looked at the Dynavin. never heard of them.
So currently, there aren't any replacements for the DSP system?
I really miss my bluetooth streaming/phone calls

Jeff at J&T distributing emailed me on Monday and said the N6 is now compatible with DSP out of the box, on US cars as well. I believe a firmware update was needed, but you are good to go.

You get $50 off using code "Bimmer"

For what its worth at the $700 price tag to have the OEM look and the features such as Navigation, bluetooth, iphone integration, and is the only system to work with DSP out of the box (others require bypassing the DSP amp), its a good value.
