Car Key Memory Configuration Information

Contributed by: X5world

CAR AND KEY MEMORY OPTIONS for 1999 and on
E46 (3 series), E39 (5 series), E38 (7 series), E52 (Z8), E53 (X5)
and for pre 9/98 production of
E38 (7 series) and E39 (5 series)

These options must be set by the dealership. The dealership uses a purpose built computer system called MODIC, propriatory to BMW, to implement your choices. There might be things out on the internet which you can buy and use at home which claim to do this, but we have not tried any, and would humbly suggest you don't either. Why risk it?

The first programming session at the dealer should be a free service, additional programming may incur a fee for labor. Also, the selections available for programming depend on the equipment options of your vehicle. For example, you cannot program seat memory, if you did not purchase power seats.
"Car Memory" includes programmed functions that are always activated, regardless of which vehicle key is used. For example, the day-time running lights will always be on, if programmed to do so, no matter who's driving.

"Key Memory" includes programmed functions that can differ, depending on which vehicle key is used. The vehicle key is identified during "unlocking", only when remote control is being used. Up to four different keys can be customized. This allows for up to four drivers to have different set of preferences programmed to their liking. For example, your spouse may like the seats closer to the steering wheel than you, etc.
Factory default settings (factory delivery condition) are indicated by bold and underlined.
Note: 3,5,7,z8,x5 denote availability on all model year 1999 (and later) of E46 (3er), E39 (5er), E38 (7er), E52 (Z8), and E53 (X5).
The 5, 7 denote availability on E38’s and E39’s produced prior to 9/98.

If you are printing this, set the orientation to "landscape" as the tables will get cut off.
