Activating phone

I just installed the AA BT retro kit. I am now trying to pair up the phone with the car. Message on nav screen says "activate phone", and voice says "turn phone on".

Should I assume that this means that I need to take it to the dealer to have it recoded, and to have the phone functionality activated??

Thanks in advance,

Greg

i would guess you do have to get it recoded, the dealer told me that mine (2002 x5) would have to get coded if i put the bt module.

On my 2005, "activate phone" meant to pair it via Bluetooth. There was a 4 digit passkey that had to be punched in to make them connect. Did you not get a small slip of paper that has that number listed?

Thanks! Mine is also a 2002 (11/01 prod.) It was pre-wired for the phone though.

Yes I did, but where or how do I enter the passkey number?

SuperGreg 09-03-2005 01:12 AM

It keeps telling me now to "turn on the phone" when I try to pair. So I'm sure the car's computer does NOT have the phone activated. Looks like a trip to the dealer is in order.

SANguru 09-03-2005 01:50 AM

you need to do a bluetooth device search with your phone (V3 I assume). Then enter the ULF passkey into you phone when they ask for pairing code. Call me on the cell if you need help..

Thanks for the reply Josh. I did a BT device search many times with my V3. The V3 was unable to locate anything during it's search. I can't locate your phone number. Could you please PM me with it? I'll then call you later this a.m. Shouldn't the Nav Screen need to show "Bluetooth Pairing" or at least have the 3 led lights blinking before my phone will be able to "find" it?

Thanks in advance,

Greg

Greg - call me on my cell phone if you still need help.

I only have your home phone number. Can you PM it to me?

Tried pairing a few more times and no luck.

Here is what the nav screen continues to show:

This is the mode you want to get into

I remember that when I first installed my BT system I had a very difficult time getting into the pairing mode as well. After letting the vehicle sit for a while and then going back and trying again I was finally successful - http://www.xoutpost.com/articles.php?...ticle&artid=26

One difference I see on my screenshot from yours, is that you have an icon that looks like a small triangle with speaker sounds coming from it at the bottom of the screen. Mine doesn't have that. It may mean nothing. I'll keep trying.

Thanks.

I think that's just a symbol indicating that I have the option set in my OBD to give me a reminder message at the top of the hour. Not BT related :tsk:

Gotcha ;)

The only other thing I can think is there may be something wrong with the "limited access pairing button". That is what initiates the pairing process :dunno:

The one thing that tells me it's working is that when the ignition is on and I depress the button, I hear a beep and it turns on the voice recog. If I push it again, it says "system off".

SANguru 09-03-2005 02:05 PM

ahhh! that's your problem... hit and hold the pairing button BEFORE turning on the ignition to acc 2.

SANguru 09-03-2005 02:10 PM

yup.. the ULF is not in discoverable mode until you see the bluetooth pairing screen.

Need more info. Where did you get your BT retro kit? What kind of phone? Are you following the pairing process exactly? Does you VR work properly? Is your phone set to "search for BT device"?

bsprtsgrp 03-31-2006 08:39 AM

Kit is from BimmerNav. Phone is Verizon Razr. I am following the pairing procedures as per the instructions that came with the kit. Phone is set to Bluetooth search but does not find any devices.

What is a VR?

UCrewX5 03-31-2006 08:45 AM

Hold the armrest pairing button down for about 10 seconds before turn the key to the on position. Once the key is on, while continuing to hold the pairing button, hit the MENU button on your nav screen. After another 10 seconds then release the pairing button and the screen should now display "BLUETOOTH PAIRING"

VR is short for Voice Recognition

Voice recognition. If that works, it would tell me that your pairing button works in the first place. Do you have the eject box with the pairing button? Are you depressing the pairing button on the eject box as opposed to the button on your steering wheel when trying to pair? What are the pairing instructions that were included with your kit?

bsprtsgrp 03-31-2006 08:57 AM

I'm depressing the pairing buttom on the eject kit, not the steering wheel. The instructions are as follows:

1. Depress and hold the pairing button (eject box) for at least 2secs, keeping it pressed, switch the key to the 1st position (accessory) keeping the pairing button depressed for an additional 2-3 secs.

2. Release the button ---- Shortly after releasing the "BLUETOOTH PAIRING should appear on the NAV screen.

BTW, when I go to MENU and TELEPHONE, it says on the NAV screen, ACTIVATE PHONE, so I believe it is seeing the ULF

When I do depress the wheel button, the VR system beeps and prompts me for a verbal input, so that works

Try to hold down the button for exactly 2-3 seconds before turning on the key. Don't hold it down any longer than that. Shall I assume that you are putting your Razr into search mode prior to holding down the button and not waiting until after you turn the key on? Is your BT antenna hooked up properly?

UCrewX5 03-31-2006 09:04 AM

Did you try what I suggested in post 23?

bsprtsgrp 03-31-2006 09:07 AM

Just tried it. Still no prompt for Bluetooth Pairing

Yes, everything is connected correctly.

bsprtsgrp 03-31-2006 09:29 AM

Stupid question....I had my NAV software updated yesterday to version 27. Would this be an issue?
