old-skool plug-in to new-skool Bluetooth
 

The '02 3.0d Sport I've just bought has nav, dsp, and a small Motorola flip-phone plugged in under the upper armrest cover. It appears to be an OEM install — the phone pops up at the press of a button and is wired in with a coiled cable.

It works if I pop my sim in, but obviously that's a bit of a pain every time.

So, what are my options? I've searched for a few days and can only find retrofits for cars with nothing installed — I'm guessing mine must already have a mic, speaker (possibly) and maybe an antenna? Will this be of any use with a BMW Bluetooth retrofit, or will I need to replace it all.

Check with the parts counter guys at the dealer by you. If I remember right there is a bluetooth adapter that snaps in the same spot as the old moto phone, and it actually worked seamlessly once the initial pairing was done.

Really? That would be brilliant if it was the case!

If the phone is a Moto V60, there is a BT adaptor, avilable on eBay.

I have the old setup too.... does anyone know if the CPT9000 works with current BT phones? (I have a DROID X)

Nope. It's a proper car phone, with a 5W transmitter and a wired handset.

Find the TCU in the boot (many pictures available on google search and google images on the subject). Locate the plug, check if it is a DB25 or a 54 pin . I suspect the former. If you are located in the US you cna buy an adaptor for about £60, or build one for about £20 if you can solder.

You will then need all the parts, including BT antenna, BT module, brackets etc. There are some excellent DIY phot retrofits on Google and Google images.
