What To Cover When Cleaning the Engine Bay?

Hi i wanted to wash the engine bay of my X but i am afraid that i am going to hurt something by putting water on it. I wanted to know what EXACTLY do i have to cover up. A picture would be nice because i dont know much about engines. I have checked the search function but noone says exactly what to cover up they just say the electrical part... well... where is all that? BTW my engine is REALLY dirty and greasy i dont think it has ever been cleaned so i think i will need to use a hose to put a lot of water in it.

Thanks
