What To Cover When Cleaning the Engine Bay?

Hi i wanted to wash the engine bay of my X but i am afraid that i am going to hurt something by putting water on it. I wanted to know what EXACTLY do i have to cover up. A picture would be nice because i dont know much about engines. I have checked the search function but noone says exactly what to cover up they just say the electrical part... well... where is all that? BTW my engine is REALLY dirty and greasy i dont think it has ever been cleaned so i think i will need to use a hose to put a lot of water in it.

Thanks

It's easy....Just hose it down, apc/degrease it. Get the brushes out to get all the nooks and crannnies. Hose it clean and apply dressing on it. I don't cover anything on my X when I wash it....

YMMV. Just do it on a cool engine and when down, either take a lawn blower to dry it out, or leave the engine on for 10 minutes or just take it for a drive....
