they look agressive and handle great in the rain... (don't know about snow) i thought they would give me a rougher ride especially going from 18s RFTs to 20inch wheels... not at all... these things are nice!!

I'm debating between the Toyo's and the Michelin Latitude. There is no difference in price at my tire shop. I'm, thinking of getting the Latitudes. Can have them mounted and balanced with 4wheel alignment for under $1K.

I have about 20K on my Toyo's and they were great all last season but as soon as I put them back on this spring they were unbalanced. I have had two different places try to balance them without no success. I am looking to get rid of them quickly. They are so unbalanced that my steering wheel shakes back violently when I get up to highway speeds. I had a flat tire this summer and went back to my winter setup while my tire was being patched and the X was smooth as could be. So it is not an allignment problem. They are just out of round, as they say. Also, the road noise is something aweful these days. It is too bad because they look great and still have a lot of tread left. I have tried everything to solve the balancing issue but I think it is time to dump them and try something else.
Maybe if I lived somewhere that I don't need to take them off in the winter they would have faired better. I had them stacked neatly in my garage all winter. I actually had them on for two months in the fall of '06 and stored them all winter '06-'07 and had them on all last summer without a problem but this spring-summer has been aweful. Just my 2 cents but I would not buy them again. If you read through here you will find both sides on this one. |

For those experiencing road noise and cupping or feathering, this is not the tire's fault. Irregularities like feathering and cupping are caused by suspension problems like poor alignment and/or worn suspension components. Once the cupping or feathering occurs, the noise begins because of the irregular shape. You need to identify the cause of the irregularities so that they don't happen in the first place. Any tire will start whirring if it's feathered or cupped.

Hi Everyone
I have been following this thread for awhile the last few month. I had finally made the jump from my OEM michelins to toyo last week as the supplies of michelins were a problem in our area. I have to say the toyo were actually not bad tires. Regarding the noise, I can only hear the road noise when the windows are down but no noise with windows up. I think the noise will become louder as the tire wear out coz all V design tires will become louder no mater what. In terms of grip in dry condition, the michelins are slightly better but judging that have brought 2 tires for the price of just getting one michelins tire, I am quite happy. Haven't tried toyo in the wet yet, but I think it should perform just as good a michelin if not better as V shape tires are most likely better in the wet. Will post results later on. I will try the Yokohama next time round too. Thanks for everyone who left a feedback, it was very helpful. |

Here is the issue with the noise. The X5 has a lot of negative camber on the rear wheels. It is evident when you look at the X5 from the rear and see the rear wheels tilting in.
This is done to create some understeer so the X5 is less prone to tip over. But it kills tires. In addition the uneven tire wear can make the Toyo's noisy. I have reset the rear camber to just about zero on my X5. My X5 seems to handle quite well (I do have 315's at all 4 corners and I have 30mm spacers at the rear, not sure if it makes a difference). I have had my Toyo's on for 20k+ miles and I have virtually zero road noise. In addition, my tires are wearing quite evenly. I do rotate them front to back about every 5k miles. FYI... my Toyo's can be a bit scary in the wet!!! In my opinion they are NOT good wet weather tires. I do not push my X when it rains. |

I have to agree with KingCon on this issue. I had the original ST's and after about 20k or so they got pretty loud. They were fairly quiet up to 20k though. They have been outstandig in the rain. I will say that the X on the Toyo's has been the most stable vehicle I have ever driven on wet roads. Especially at highway speeds. I will probably try out the ST II's in a few thousand miles when the mine are completely worn out. I have not really experienced any cupping or atypical tread wear over the life of the tires and I have never rotated them.
Is there anyone with a significant amount of miles on their ST II's that can chime in with their opinion of road noise? |

warranty
My 2005 4.4i came with #87 20" wheels and proxy st.
Not many miles at 25k but these tires are loud as hell. Everyone i drive comments on them! Purchased it in October 08 and got the extra wheel and tire warranty. Supposed to cover any type of damage road or otherwise. Do you think i should have them looked at for unusual wear etc... maybe get a brand new set under warranty?? thoughts? |
