For instance, the original factory wheel weighs 35lbs with tire inflated. The 22" wheels i'm running weigh 55lbs with tire inflated. The added rotational mass is putting more strain on the braking and suspension components in comaprison to the OEM wheel.

Think you answered your own question, yes, nearly doubling the unsprung weight will effect brake distance, wear of the pads and life of the brakes. Added wheel weight is the equivalent off adding mass at the worst possible point. That is why you want lighter aftermarket wheels, not insanely heavier ones. Going from 35-55lbs is crazy, you've added 80lbs in wheel mass to the car, why?
