Why do my 255/50 R19V get so noisy?

2005 X5 4.4i/Sport Package 66K miles. front tires are 255/50 R19

OEM Diamaris got noisy the last half of their life.
Replacement Nexen (Korean) -same experience.

I'm about to replace the front Nexens again due to wear (30K) and they are quite noisy..

Can anyone recommend a tire that will not get obnoxiously noisy with wear?
Before buying this car, I tested an X5 with 19 inch Toyos-incredibly noisy.

My other car is a Lexus GX470 (AWD SUV) with Michelin LTX M/S 2's. No noise at 60K on the tires

thanks, Jim

I think you're trying to compare apples and oranges up there as your GX470 and X5 are totally different breed of vehicle. Understandably, so are the tires, which, are completely different classes.....one set was designed with creature comforts in mind, the other with priority to withstand you thrashing 5500lbs into corners as you would a car and come out the other end. The best option in your case would be to find a "touring or highway" type of all season tire as opposed to a street truck tire which will be harsher, noisier and wear quicker. Unfortunately, when it comes to the X and its 19"+ staggered wheels, your choices dwindle rather quickly.

Hope this helps.

Sure, I understand that the two types of tires are as different as night and day.

My question was, what is it about these low profile tires that causes them to get so noisy with tread wear, when the conventional profile tires don't do that?

Harder rubber compounds and tread that is designed with traction, not noise in mind.
