Lug missing...how big of a safety issue?

Long story short...well sort of.

Bought new tires (4)
For the life of me I could find the "key" for the locking lug nuts so the shop said they could get them off - no worries.

They installed the new tires and I left. I didn't even think to check how they dealt with the lock issue.

Anyway, I get home and realize that I had one lug missing on each wheel. I come to find out to get the lugs off they damaged the locking lugs beyond repair. I would have assumed that they would have replaced them - at least with a standard lug. Nope. They didn't tell me this either.

I went back to the shop and they acted like it was no big deal. The guy even said "it's not really that big of a deal, you could drive 100MPH like this and it wouldn't matter". Only after I asked did they offer to order new lugs for me.

A few days later they arrived and I went over to the shop to pick them up. They handed me a bag and walked away. Really? You aren't going to even install these for me?!? I just spent $1500 on tires. Nice...

I find it hard to believe that missing a lug is "safe" especially on each wheel. But what do I know...

I do know I will be finding a new place to buy tires in the future.

I swapped out my summers to winters and I install the lugs with a torque wrench. My wrench went afoul on the last wheel I thought I had them fully torqued. I come find out that one of my tires lugs were really loose and I ended up loosing 2 of the 5 lugs and the third and fourth were loose but the 5th was tight. I felt a weird vibrations and was lucky enough to catch it. I took the car to the dealer and had them inspect the wheel and they could not find any damage (My SA is a good friend and I was with them when they looked at it. They said it all looked good to them. With you only missing one lug, it is not the best but I am pretty sure you did not cause any damage.

It may not be much of a safety issue but I would not go back to that tire place.

Driving with missing/improperly torqued lugs can result in warped brake rotors.
