Maybe they are going back to their roots. Originally, BMWs all looked the same except for different sizes/lengths.

There was a famous quote by a German car designer who described BMWs and Mercedes make "the same sausages, but different lengths...."

However, remember, that is someone's rendition and not the official BMW pic. We'll have to wait for another 2 more years to see the real new 7-series.

I can't believe they'd give up the Bangle Butt that easily and ape the E90 that much. Styling doesn't usually flow up from the lower end of the range. I do think though, that they will lower the roofline and have smaller windows a la M-B CLS and even the new S-Class.
