BMW 6-series facelift and new 635d

Developers have been hard at work fine tuning the facelifted version of the BMW 6-series ahead of the coupe’s official unveiling at September’s Frankfurt Auto Show. Recent spy shots have revealed that the updated model will get a new bumper, revised taillights and a small bootlid spoiler, but the big news is that we’ll also see two new six-cylinder variants including an all-new 635d.

This image, taken of the interior of one of the test-mules, was recently posted up on AutoScoops. It clearly shows the word ‘diesel’ positioned above the fuel tank gauge and confirms that there’s a new diesel 6-series in the works. The 635d will run the familiar twin-turbo 3.0L diesel engine, with around 286hp and 580Nm of torque from as low as 1,750rpm, which should be enough to accelerate the coupe to 100km/h from rest in around six seconds.

The engine in the 630i is also expected to be replaced by the award-winning petrol 3.0L twin-turbo six from the 335i coupe and should develop around 300hp, a significant leap over the paltry 258hp of the naturally aspirated motor.

The 6-series has been one of our favorite models for a while now. Its blend of traditional BMW styling and a menacing stature give the coupe real road presence. The addition of new models will only improve upon the already formidable lineup.

1) 6 is a more comfortable cruiser. More room too; the E92 is a bit claustraphobic for taller people.

2) It's a diesel. It'll get substantially better gas mileage than a petrol 335i. I wouldn't mind buying any diesel from BMW, except in an M car. I'd happily take a 320d (or 120d) as a commuter car and get low fuel consumption while still having a heckuva lotta fun in the bends. Plus, I'd be "eco-friendly" for once!
