Edmunds Inside Line acquires 2002 M3 for Long Term Test

Let me first tell you how awesome this is. The Long Term blogs are fantastic, they really give you a true sense of the car and what it is to live with them. If you haven't checked it out yet, I highly suggest you do, here.

Inside line bought the M3 for long term testing. They usually do this with brand new cars, to see how they handle daily life and find out everything about them. This is the second time (I think) of buying a old car, which happens to be this very nice black, almost loaded, 6-spd, whose owner gave it up for a 335i . Not bad at 49,000 mi, which is good for an '02.

I loved my E46 aside from the exhaust rasp, even with my AA exhaust that still sucked.

Speak for yourself, love the RASP!! Long live the E46 M3 RASP!! Though, the rasp was less noticeable inside my 2004 M3 vs. older E46 M3s, but with the windows down, you definitely can hear it!!!

However, I do live in an area with warmer weather which the rasp is less noticeable when warmed up than when it is cold....

+1. Yes, it sounded a bit rattly when cold, but I liked hearing that exhaust note whenever someone revs it up. Probably the best sounding I6.

Since we have a bunch of prior M3 owners, what exhaust do you think sounds best? Was looking at the Dinan exhaust, couple on ebay.

I have to agree that the rasp is annoying but its starting to grow on me.

I know theres also a lot of debate about the SMG but I'll tell you after a few hours of driving with it I don't think I would ever want a stick. I think its great. Just need to learn how to "launch" it.
