Hearing our pleas, we're being told BMW will be bringing the diesel 3-series to the US in the coming months. As proof, we've got shots from our spy friends at KGP of the oil-burning BMW doing some final testing on American soil as well shots of it at the green-handled pump. The 2009 BMW 335d should feature a slightly lower level of performance compared to the European turbodiesel, but that still means 265 HP and 425 lb-ft of torque. This should result in a 0-to-60 MPH time of around 6.2 seconds while getting a rumored 23 MPG city / 33 MPG highway. Full spy report below the jump.Spy Report

BMW is in the midst of its final testing for the U.S.-spec 335d—the first diesel-powered Bimmer to be sold in North America. The introduction of the 335d will coincide with the launch of facelifted sheetmetal destined for the entire 3-series lineup.

Due to e-mission restrictions, the U.S. version of the 335d will reportedly be down on power from its European cousin (265 hp and 425 lb-ft of torque vs. 282 hp and 428 lb-ft.), but even our U.S. numbers—especially the fat torque number—promise terrific performance that may well be enough convince people to make the move to diesel.

As with the 335i gasoline engine, BMW will use two turbochargers—a small, low-pressure turbo to aid low-end acceleration and a more potent turbo to help at higher engine speeds. Acceleration for the 335d is expected be around 6.2-seconds to sixty, while fuel consumption will likely yield 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.

BMW's new diesel range is expected to launch under the banner: BMW Advance Diesel with BluePerformance (Blue denotes the use of AdBlue—the aqueous urea solution used to reduce the diesel's nitrogen oxide emissions). The 335d is expected to bow this fall.

I REALLY hope they put the diesel in the touring as well but knowing BMWNA...... probably not anytime soon.

The comparison to the 335 gasoline engine isn't valid. While they both have two turbochargers, the design is completely different. The gasoline engine uses two equal parallel turbos (one for each 3 cylinders), sized very small to reduce lag. The 335d uses a small turbo and a large turbo, plumbed in parallel but operating more sequentially, with a valve to control them.

The mileage figures listed will make the 335d a tough sell except for those interested in the novelty factor. Essentially, the performance is the same as the 328, with the mileage somewhere between the 323 (same in the city, much better that the 335d on the highway) and the 328 (same on the highway). I realize these are not real numbers, just a teaser article, but still....

Are you giving odds on whether they are using it to pull a weight sled for testing, or dragging around a supplemental diesel tank so that they can make it between diesel stations?

I agree. I still don't see why some people are excited about the diesel engines for the 3's - I could see the argument for more torque for the X's and especially if you like to tow.
But for the 3's?...doesn't make sense to me. Any improved mpg will be negated by higher diesel prices and higher sticker (and less acceleration) ....unless you work for Dominos and drive a few 100K a year delivering pies.

First off, the EPA way of testing fuel consumption is flawed. That's why you often get wierd numbers, such as better fuel economy for an automatic versus a manual.

Secondly, lets not start the whole "Why diesels" debate again. Diesels have a much farther range on a tank of diesel. They have more useable power in day-to-day driving. And even if you feel like thrashing the car all day, you'll still get respectable fuel consumption numbers.............unlike petrol. Thrash an X5 3.0si for a few hours non stop and then tell me if you can get better than 9 miles to the gallon.

Yup, like I said, I can sort of see the point for the SU(A)V's but not as much for a 3'er......no savings there.
