X ///M Governor?

Was picking up some parts from dealer today and got into a convo with a parts guy that seemed knowledgeable about the X's. We were discussing the 4.6iS and he mentioned that the X ///M's are slightly de-tuned as a safety measure but once unleashed, it will result in around 570 HP and 520 tq. I'm beyond impressed with what i've already read and experienced with the X ///M's but if there's any truth to this, that's just remarkable!

I would expect when dinan comes out with a reprogram that you will see about 600-625 hp and 625-650 tq from just a flash. Look at the 335i 300hp/300tq stock. Flashed 366ph/379tq.

These BMW turbo engines are always detuned a lot. They have a lot of potential. I could see this X5M just being flashed doing close to 3.9-4.0 sec 0-60 mph.

Its detuned b/c they're dropping the same motor into the F10 M5. BMW is probably going to save some money in this recession by sharing M motors across platforms. The new M5 will prob get the full blown TT motor with close to 600hp as reported by various sources.

This is going to sound stupid, but I know a guy who knows a guy who is a Level 1 engineer at BMW. He worked on the X5M tune and said it was originally tuned for 600hp. But BMW detuned it because of realiability concerns.

EVERY factory turbo engine from EVERY manufacturer is detuned.

Just cause a turbo can put out say, 15lb. of boost doesn't mean it should. Remember, when building a car there has to be a balance found between performance and longevity.

More power = more wear on the brakes.
More power = more stress on the suspension.

Cause when you make a car faster you also have to make it stop faster and handle better.

And while I have no doubt for a second that the 555hp. leaves tons of potential power on the table the question is, at what price? And I'm not talking $$$.

Bypass valves, hoses, etc. Everything needs to sync together and just cause something can make more power doesn't necessarily mean it should.

I don't disagree with your comment B-Line...the tech and i did discuss if the M's could handle it. He brought up the E53 LeMans V12 and how BMW did some modifications but in general the E53 frame handled the excess power with ease. He mentioned that that if unleashed, the M's were designed to handle the power and then some. He kept repeating that the M's being de-tuned was simply a safety measure but that true enthusiasts always discover a work-around to unleash any performance BMW's true potential.

I was impressed with his knowledge of the X5's in particular my 4.6iS.

If that little black box from Vishnu performance woke up my neighbor's 335i that much, I have a feeling a reflash/piggyback (when available) will make the X5M untouchable (As far as SUV's go).

I wish Checkered Flag BMW here in Virginia Beach got an X5M for their showroom.

Well, all I can say is that even at stock the power is incredible. I raced a GTO last night (100hp less, 100 torque less, 1250lb less) and even at 160+ it was still working up at a solid pace. The 177mph governor is not the top end of this car, and frankly, how much more could you really have unless you made it a track car? Mine's a daily driver so it has to be reliable.

Dude... Be careful. I have no issues with speed but would much prefer you exhibiting it on the track than on public roads. Rant over.

Oh absolutely there was no one on the roads at all... Michigan highways at 2:30am are like bars on Sunday mornings, theoretically someone could be there but not likely haha
