Breakin Question X5M

Any problems you guys see in making a 850 mile all freeway trip during breakin on an M. Of course I would change gears to make the rpm's variable on the way. Considering driving from the Bay area back to Seattle after picking up an M. Thoughts?

Don't do it.. You will blow up the car...

Just kidding. That's what I did.. Northern Cali to Los Angeles... And don't be too much of a wimp on the car.. It wants to be driven, just not beaten.

Here's a link to the thread I made about the drive.

Thanks I read your post from before. Great post. You took 101 down though right? I would assume on that road having driven it many times it would constantly change the revs on the engine and gearing as it was driven. I would just be I5 all the way home somewhat constant speed non stop. Was thinking I would manually drop to 5th at times to change engine revs.

I took the 1, which I guess is also the 101. Basically, Pacific Coast Highway most of the way. As far as the constant changing of the revs, well, that was kind of dictated for me by the curvature of the road.

Again, I think people are way to literal regarding break in periods. Just drive the car. Don't go out of your way to beat on it but also don't feather it. It's probably worse to flog the engine at low rpm than it is to rev it out. And it's also important to wear in the top portion of the gears.

So drive the car.. Don't be too concerned. When is the last time you heard of a car having engine damage because of an improper break in?

At the factory, they run the engines at high RPM to test them long before they ever installed in the actual vehicle.

My point is, you don't need to race it 0-60 at every light.. But some spirited driving is healthy.

I would avoid using the cruise control if I were you and just enjoy the natural fluctuation of speed. Other than that, you're probably way over thinking it.

Yeah I agree. How you described is always how I have broken in other vehicles just have never done it before in one drive. Thanks for your input I really appreciate it. Enjoy.

Slow poke...
My car was broken in a week ago and I got mine two weeks after you.

Now go mash that throttle so you can finally hear the exhaust note..
I love the way it sounds when the X shifts... Gurgle, gurgle...

If I lived in La La land, I wouldn't be scurrying to put on some last minute miles on my Z. She'll get plenty of miles on her now.

Will do on the go-pedal.. I think it probably sounds better from outside than inside..
