exhaust system upgrade
Exhaust systems But when i looked around in the net i found out that bmw made the exhaust system in such way that it charge the turbo to get the best response from the turbo. now anyone know if i replaced the muffler will that effect the performance of the exhaust in negative way ? |

According to a source at M GmbH, any change of exhaust backpressure/exhaust design can have a serious impact on performance/throttle response.
Don't have more on this, sorry. Maybe you should just wait until some X5/X6M owners gather some experience with aftermarket exhaust systems before you get one. I'm in the same boat: my X5M sounds horrible. The exhaust sound is loud indeed but it sounds more like a turbo charged 4-cyl than a V8. |

In a turbo car, anything after the turbine housing is useless (except for getting hot exhaust gases out safely) and a restriction.
Was BMW's design more restrictive than Hamann's?

Besides the X5M, I also own a Porsche 997 Turbo. I can assure you that any change in backpressure changes throttle response and/or torque distribution at certain rev figures. Modern turbo charged cars are designed as a "whole", the exhaust system is a very important part of the whole system.

I was thinking about the Eisenmann exhaust...but I am leasing the car, so really no point...rather spend $$ on different wheels

Guys: caution with aftermarket exhaust systems. So far I heard a couple of them and none really improves the sound of the X5/X6M, they just make it sound louder.
I'm looking for a deeper V8 growl type of sound but all these aftermarket exhausts actually keep the high pitch sound of the OEM exhaust and even make it worse sometimes. There are a couple of examples on YouTube, so before you jump the boat, make sure you make the right choice. There is also a rumor that BMW plans an exhaust system "update" (software...controlling the flap) to improve the X5/X6M sound. I may have some more information soon. |

I think it's the nature of the engine and how it's designed... we're not gonna get a deep growl out of it.

Anyone heard the Eisenmann yet? I am waiting for them to post videos.
I have heard the AC Schnitzer in person, and the exhaust did seem to change the sound quite a bit. Then again, I am not an owner (yet) and have not driven the car everyday.
