Drove the X5M in the snow

I see the forecast for snow, so I call my buddy up and tell him to order me the DWS tire. I was going to wait till the end of November. But I guess that went out the window.
So we get the snow and I am without tires. I take the X5M out just to see how bad it is and I was wrong.

The truck tore it up yesterday. Never was stuck, never had any issues. I drove through piles of snow, unplowed roads, over small trees that fell and it was fine.

Now I almost regret ordering the DWS. Considering how fat the tires are, are the DWS really going to be that much better? I know getting rid of the runflat is going to be great. But as far as snow??? The RFT were perfect.
The main drawbacks are the wide tires. and the truck sits too low to be a snow machine. my front nose turned into a snow plow on some roads. and today I realized I lost the driver's side front tow loop cover
But besides that, the truck is perfect.

I almost forgot. on friday, I took it off road to get to my stand to hunt. once again the low ground clearance was not that great for that. But this is my winter/hunting truck, so too bad. It will have to do

I am very impressed by the all wheel drive in this truck. I was watching the torque distribution and it was pretty cool. Even with the summer Runflats, it did not get stuck in the woods in some very muddy areas. and it never got stuck in snow.

By the way, do these tow covers come painted from BMW?? I hate having to get a small round piece of plastic sent to a body shop. and online places to order one? or stealer the only place?

Bro that is really good to know that the truck performed well in the snow with stock tires and no clearance issues...thanks for posting this..

DO NOT, I repeat do not be under any illusion that those tires can perform on icy snow conditions. The slush yesterday was far from the ice and snow that comes in winter. I drove the car a couple of times last winter, got caught off guard, on snow and it was horrid, you can not stop and will most definitely get into an accident. I hope others will not be encouraged to drive with the stock tires on winter condition, bad idea!!

I have never used a dedicate snow tire on any of my SUVs. and I have never been stuck. Last year during the blizzard, I drove down the highway in my QX56, at 50mph with no problems on the factory M&S.
My understanding is only a dedicated snow tire will help on ice.

I am not condoning NOT changing tires. But it is nice to know, it drove fine. Getting stuck is my worst fear of driving in the snow. as long as I have owned a AWD or 4wd, I have never been stuck and I am out in the worst conditions. and none had dedicated snows
Regardles, unless my buddy dropped the ball, I have the DWS coming. But right now, I kind of wish he did drop the ball and not order them. My RFT have a ton life left and like I said it was nothing in the snow. and I drove on a few unplowed roads, where snow was 5-6 inches deep. drove straight through it, not like a drift car either.LOL

I hope the results of snow driving will be drastically better with the DWS. I just cannot imagine it being better then what I experienced yesterday

The ground is still not that cold, but when temperature drops to -10 it will be a different story. If this is how it drives with performance tires, you will be amazed how it does with snow tires. You will be passing everyone in heavy snow.

LeMansX5 posted a good link above about winter tires.

To all those posting misinformation about being safely being able to use summer tires in winters where the temperature drops 44 degrees Fahrenheit, please read the article that I posted in this thread

Shawn said "The transition temperature where summer performance tires or all-season tires lose traction and winter tires enter their peak operating window is around 7′ Celsius (44.6 degrees Fahrenheit)." I agree with that based on my experience of trying to use summer tires when there was an inch of snow in my driveway -- I slid a yard when I braked normally. It's the tire compound that is the most important factor.

Note that I'm not talking about All Season tires.

My comment above was not directed at the tires. I was more worried about the clearance of the truck in snow. So it was good to know that he was able to drive through snow without much issues with clearance.

Already decided to go with Pirelli snow and ice. Unfortunately have not got the truck yet..I was hoping for a warmer than usual Nov so that I could run the truck on the performance tires for atleast a few weeks. Oh well, mother nature had other ideas lol...

This is what the dealer told me too: temp of around 45deg...Did u guys in the NE switch the tires already? Temps are in upper 40s/Low 50s in daytime with 30s at night...Is it time to switch?

I'll switch this week or next. Typically do it mid-November.

There is definitely a clearance issue. I wish this truck had an audjustable height suspension. My front nose tuned into a snow plow in the deeper snow. Thats how I lost the tow hook cover.
So no matter how good the AWD is, no matter how good of a snow tire you use, it is still not a snow beast. because it has low ground clearance. You drive up onto too much snow, you will get stuck in this truck
