Has anyone installed a roof rack system on their M?

So I'll probably be taking a road trip this summer, want to be able to install a carrier on the rack. I already have the rails but would need to install cross bars, etc. Has anyone already done this?

I have not, but i can say that the BMW roof rack from my 4.8 does not fit the smaller rails on my X5M. I guess there is a new part # for the M style roof rails. Hopefully someone will chime in...

I would go with a Thule roof rack. They have a foot pack that will mount bars to the skinny m roof rails.

Thanks for the reply...what's a "foot pack"?

The foot pack is what attaches the cross rails to the roof rails that are already on the top of the X5. Thule sells bars and foot packs separately because roof racks aren't mounted the same way on every car. Some take foot packs that attach to existing roof rails (like with the X5) and others need foot packs that attach to the rain gutters or other BMW's like the 3 series for example have flaps in the gutter that fold up to expose holes that the foot packs screw in to.

I did see an X5m the other day with the stock E70 BMW roof rack so it looks like the OEM roof rack that works on the normal roof rails might work on the m roof rails. This would be easy to find out by called parts at your local bmw dealer.
