Arrow 2013 BMW M5 may have more horsepower than reported

From Bimmerboost.com:

We knew the upgraded S63tu (technical update) Twin Turbo 4.4 liter V8 in the F10 M5 would be stronger than the standard S63 Twin Turbo V8 4.4 liter units in the X5M and X6M even accusing BMW of sandbagging. We just did not think it would be this much stronger. We first reported on the differences between the S63 V8's in the M SUV's and the F10 M5 in June of last year and the M5 S63tu V8 has higher compression at 10.0:1 versus 9.3:1 and runs more boost at 22 psi versus 17 psi for the SUV's.

Well, the end result is 527 rear wheel horsepower completely stock on pump gas. This dyno comes to us courtesy of our Premier Vendor IND-Distribution whom we thank for sharing it with us.

To put this power in perspective, the X5M and X6M put down 456 all wheel horsepower stock on 93 octane in SAE on a dynojet. So the M5 is much, much stronger partially due to routing the power to the rear wheels with a dual clutch transmission versus all four with an automatic and also due to more boost with higher compression.

For those who like to calculate drivetrain losses, the M5 is rated at 560 horsepower stock. That would put the drivetrain losses at 6%. Using the traditional dynojet standard of 15% the rear wheel horsepower should be at 476. BMW is underrating the new turbo motors and especially the M motors considerably. We are definitely glad they are over-delivering.

AW horse power is always lower on a similar crank number. The same S63 will put more power on 2 wheel dyno.

I wonder how they compare the AWD car to the RWD on a dyno. Different dynos of course, but still, how does one equate two different driving platforms?

What would M5 put down if it were driving all wheels instead of just two?

All the hp in the world doesn't compensate for having to listen to a synthetic exhaust note via the stereo speakers.

the rotational inertia of the AWD system is what the loss is from.

Hard to equate the two without having a lot of specs on the car and lots of mathing skill

It's not even about having the option to disable it. It is the fact that the car is so far from what an M car used to be that BMW felt they needed to boost the exhaust note artifically instead of just giving it a better exhaust. Don't get me wrong, this car is going to be faster than the e60 in every single way, but with every new generation the M cars are loosing a little personality and it is sad.

I remember seeing a Car & Driver comparo a few months back between the E63, S6 and the new M5. They ranked the M5 last. That's right, last. Even more sad for BMW was that they said they praised the Merc's chassis more than the M5. The vastly underpowered S6 won the comparison by the way.

I just saw another comparo where the A7 beat out the 640i grand coupe.

I know it is not just about these magazine comparison, but BMW is getting beat more and more. I know the competition is getting better, but BMW has lost their way a bit, imo. Maybe it will take Audi topping them in total sales for BMW to regroup and get back to basics. I wish BMW would worrly less about cars like the 3 and 5 series GT's, X4, X6, etc. pay more attention to what made them the best sport sedan manufacturer in the first place.
